Winter weather causes problems for Anchorage commuters

Winter weather causes problems for Anchorage commuters: ANCHORAGE (KTUU) Alaskans woke up to a blanket of snow across Southcentral Friday morning, a situation that created problems for drivers.

Between 12:00 a.m. and 4 p.m., Anchorage police responded to 44 accidents, including six with minor injuries and 84 vehicles in distress.

To put things into perspective, on Thursday, with no snow on the ground, APD says only 12 accidents were reported, two resulting in minor injuries and eight vehicles in distress.

Although it was a busy day for emergency responders, Anchorage Firefighter Nick Constantino said it could have been worse because Anchorage schools held an in-service day, giving kids the day off.

“It easily could have been over 100 vehicle accidents throughout the Anchorage bowl,” said Constantino. “Driving to work this morning I noticed there were not nearly as many cars on the road, just people going to work. So with an in-service day, it’s very good that it happened today with the snow and take everyone off the road.”

With slick roads expected into the weekend, emergency responders encourage drivers to take it slow, give cars in front plenty of room and make sure that tires have good traction.
